During the recent British heatwave, we were pleased to be invited to Planet Ice, Solihull. We thought it would be a great opportunity to cool down for a while. Also Mini had not been to a proper ice rink before, so thought it would be a great chance for her to learn to skate.
Mr Mack and I had our very first date, 16 years ago ice skating. He told me he was useless, I however thought he was playing it cool. Turned out he actually was totally rubbish! We spent most of our first date with me helping him not to fall flat on his face. I love ice skating, although wasn’t able to join in at the moment, being 27 weeks pregnant. I was interested to see if Mini had inherited my skills, or her dads, lack of!
Planet Ice, is located a short way outside of Solihull centre. There is a large car park at the ice rink. When we arrived, we went to collect ice skates for Mini and Mr Mack. Mini thought it was hilarious walking about on her skates. She managed very well on dry land, time to see how she got on when she was on the ice!
Mini tried really hard on the ice, she struggled at first to understand what she needed to do with her feet. I suppose its natural to try to walk rather than glide. There were plenty of stewards on the ice to assist, one lady came over to help Mini. She spent lots of time with her one to one and was very patient with her. Within a short space of time she was definitely improving and becoming more confident.
Planet Ice also offer learn to skate sessions for all ages, which I think would be a good idea to help Mini develop her skills on the ice.
Skate aids are also available to hire at an additional fee for little ones. Mini tried out the penguin, which is designed to help you stand up on the ice whilst pushing it along. There are also sit on walrus’ available. Mini said this was her favourite part as she liked being pushed around the ice by Daddy. She did however, let him have a turn too and tried to push him around!
Our family session was open between 11am and 4pm and you are free to spend as long as you want on the ice during the session. There was also lots of pop music which Mini enjoyed singing along to. Mr Mack and Mini spent around an hour on the ice, which was just about right as she was getting tired by that time.
Planet Ice are also putting on a very special Christmas show of Cinderella on Ice. The show is on 19th December for both a matinee and evening performance. We’ve got our tickets for the show and Mini was extra excited when we told her she was coming back to the ice rink to see the show. It promises to be a really special event and is a different offering to the normal festive shows. Tickets are now on sale available here.
We all had a fun afternoon at Planet Ice, thank you for having us. I’m looking forward to coming back again in the near future when I’m able to join in with the skating too, then we can have a family skate race.
