Baking Emoji Cupcakes: Junior Bakes Subscription Box August Review

Emoji Cupcakes

After surviving Mini’s first full week of school, we planned to do some baking together. Mini recently went to see the Emoji movie and the cinema and was very excited to receive the Emoji cupcake kit from Bakes Box.

Whilst baking I hoped that it would give us an opportunity to talk about how Mini had felt about starting school. She was more willing than normal to talk whilst we were baking as she happily chatted away as we worked.

The Junior Bakes Box comes complete with chef hat, brightly coloured instruction card and all dry ingredients to make the cakes. All we had to add were the wet ingredients, egg, butter and water.

After pre-heating the oven, we started by mixing the ingredients in the Kitchenaid. You can of course do this by hand or with a hand held mixer. When the mixture was combined Mini spooned it into the cupcake cases. She made a bit of mess but had lots of fun in the process, I had to resist the urge to make them neater.

Whilst the cupcakes were baking we made the buttercream icing, again using the Kitchenaid. Mini loved the bright yellow food colouring although she did end up with yellow fingers after squeezing the packet into the mixer.

Decorating the cakes

When the cakes were baked and cooled, I helped Mini to spoon the yellow icing onto the tops to make the base of the face. She then used the black icing pen to decorate different types of faces to create the emojis. We had fun thinking about different types of emojis that we could create on top of the cakes.

I turned around to get a cloth to wipe Mini’s hands after the decorating and she had already helped herself to one of the cupcakes. They clearly must have been irresistible to her. She said they were delicious and begged me for another one. Luckily I convinced her to save some for when Mr Mack arrived home after work.

Review Thoughts

We really enjoyed making the emoji cupcakes. I found the instructions clear and easy to follow. The recipe was suitable for little ones and was less complex than previous boxes that we have made. I think that this box would be suitable for a wide range of children as you could easily adapt how much support is required for them to make.

The recipe stated that there would be enough to make 6 cupcakes however, we found that it made 13, we just used our own cake cases for the extra mixture.

This would be an easy recipe to follow again and you would be able to use different colours and decorations in the future to make different types of faces and designs.

The boxes are a great way of getting children involved with baking and are a good introduction to new recipes that you may not feel as confident at attempting with little ones.

I think they boxes make a great present idea as you can buy them as a one off or as a subscription package.
