Yesterday we were invited to go and see The Snow Dragon. The Tall Stories Production, is being shown at The Patrick Theatre, which is part of the Birmingham Hippodrome. I’ve been to the Hippodrome many times before but didn’t know that The Patrick Theatre was there too. It was a great size for a family performance as you would get a good view wherever you sat.
The Snow Dragon is a story of Billy the Goat whose parents taught him that being the best in life is the most important quality. Billy sets out on an adventure to pick berries for The Snow Dragon, who he believes will leave him a present in return on New Year’s Eve. With the help of his friends, Spike, Rosie and the Wolves, Billy learns important lessons about being kind, sharing and thinking of others.
When we arrived at the theatre Mini was invited to join in with some Christmas crafts in the foyer. She decorated a mini candle holder and made a cute wooden Reindeer, complete with a jingle bell. It was a lovely idea and made more of our trip out. From 8th January The Hippodrome are also starting a series of Family Fun in the Foyer sessions which look like a great idea, you can find out more about the sessions here.
The show itself was 55 minutes long and is aimed at children over 3. I was really impressed with how captivated all the children were and I didn’t see any fidgeting at all. The cast kept their energy levels high and there were opportunities for audience participation which the children enjoyed.
The story is told by just three actors, Danny Hendrix, who plays Billy throughout the show and Amy Harris and Glyn Williams who cleverly and seamlessly change into lots of different characters throughout the story. The show is very simple yet so clever how it uses actions, songs and simple props to bring the story to life.
We all really enjoyed the performance and would highly recommended it for families as a festive treat or alternative to the traditional pantomime show. Although it is suitable for little ones, there was also plenty of humour to keep the grown ups entertained too.
After the show had finished we were kindly invited to meet the cast and have our photographs taken on the set. Mini enjoyed practicing her wolf howl with the cast and asking them questions about the production.
The Snow Dragon is being shown in Birmingham until 7th January 2018 and you can book tickets here.
