Junior Bakes Subscription Box Review – July

Jammy Dodgers

Do you like the idea of baking with children but aren’t sure where to start or which recipes would be suitable? We have been using Junior Bakes Boxes for a few months and have loved them.

Each box contains a little chef’s hat, a bright and clear instruction card and recipe and all the dry ingredients you need, pre-weighed out and labelled. All you need to add is any wet ingredients, such as eggs, milk, butter etc.

Each month is a totally different recipe and is a lovely surprise opening the box to see what we will be baking each month. Mini, who is 4 and a half has always enjoyed joining in with me when I have been making cakes and has loved receiving this through the post just for her. The boxes fit through the letterbox which is very handy as I work full time and hate having to go to the post depot to collect parcels.

This month’s box was to make Jammy Dodgers, we decided to make them early Saturday morning with the plan to take them to a friend’s house for dinner that evening to share.

Mini put on her apron and the chef’s hat that was included in the box and we got to work. Firstly, we made the biscuit dough in the Kitchenaid, you don’t have to but we were a little pressed for time and Mini loves to turn it on for me and carefully adds the ingredients into the bowl.

Once the mixture was combined, we left it to chill in the fridge whilst we floured a surface ready to roll it out, Mini especially enjoyed this bit and enthusiastically spread the flour across the work surface.

Cutters aren’t included in the box, however it does suggest that you can use two different size glasses if you don’t have proper cutters. Mini chose a round cutter and a flower shape for the middle from my baking drawer of goodies.

We then had to roll the mixture out, which Mini had a really good go at with the rolling pin, I just finished it off at the end to make sure it was rolled out evenly.

Once the biscuits had chilled again it was time to bake them. Once cooled, we then put a spoon of jam onto the larger round biscuits and put one of the smaller shapes on top to make a sandwich. We then mixed the icing together and used a piping bag to decorate the biscuits, we ended up getting a little sticky at this point.

Mini proudly presented them to our friends after dinner and enjoyed sharing them out. We all found them really delicious with a good crisp bite to them.

Bakes boxes come in either one off boxes or as part of a subscription package and I think would make great presents for children. There are also boxes suitable for grown ups too available if you wanted to expand your baking skills and try out some new recipes.
