Yes it’s the middle of Summer in June, however, today we went to find out about a fantastic new show for Christmas time. We were kindly invited by The Old Rep, Birmingham, to attend the launch of their branch new show for Christmas 2018 of Pinocchio.
Each year the theatre puts on special remake of a classic story in their family festive show. This year’s performance tells the well know tale of Pinocchio, a wooden puppet who embarks upon an adventure, with his trusted friend, Jimeny Cricket, to become a real boy.
The performance showcases talent from both professional actors and students who attend The Birmingham Ormiston Academy (BOA).
Upon arrival at the theatre, we were kindly given some fair tickets. We were able to exchange the tickets for a game of traditional games such as hook a duck, hoopla and to try to knock all the cans down. Emelia had fun knocking her cans down and managed to get them all over apart from one. We also bumped into the lovely Kelly from Small House Big Trips and Mini enjoyed getting to know her two little girls.
The foyer was decorated in beautiful bright colours and had a really fun theme running throughout. After some refreshments we were invited into the auditorium to see a sneak preview of the Pinocchio performance. All of the actors we saw were students from BOA as the professional actors were still in the audition stages. The actors we saw were only given 24 hours to rehearse their scenes. I can honestly say that they all did a fantastic job and were engaging, enthusiastic and well polished. I’m sure they will be even more amazing after more time to rehearse.
The stage was decorated again in bright, circus like colours and live music was played on stage. Mini loved the costumes of all the characters, particularly Pinocchio with his bright red cheeks. The performance gave a great insight into the performance and what more may be awaiting audiences in the Winter. Mini left the theatre desperate to know what was going to happen next in the story and can’t wait to come back to find out what happens next.
Pinocchio runs from 17th November until 30th December and will make a perfect family outing in the run upto or throughout the festive period. All of the show times are at either 10.15am, 1.30pm or 5.30pm, really demonstrating that this truly is a performance designed with a younger audience in mind.
Tickets for Pinocchio are on sale and available here.
