I love to mark Baby Mack’s special milestones as he grows up and his first haircut is no exception. He was recently invited to the newly opened The Lion Zen salon in Birmingham for this special experience.
His hair had grown so long at the back and it was definitely time for his first trim. Getting him ready to go made me reflect on how quickly this last year has gone, it only seems like a few weeks ago that we were meeting him for the first time.
The Lion Zen Salon, Birmingham
The Lion Zen is a specialist children’s hair and beauty salon, beautifully designed with exceptional attention to detail. Offering vegan and organic products whilst also ensuring a fun and memorable experience for little ones.
The first floor of the salon is decorated with a bright jungle theme complete with elephant, lion and zebra cutting chairs. The rest of the space is clean and airy, creating a calm atmosphere.
The lower floor of The Lion Zen boasts a stunning princess pamper area, which we were lucky to have a little sneak peak off. There are huge plush thrones to sit on for a foot spa, whilst wearing one of the beautiful silk gowns. There is also a nail bar for mini manicures and pedicures and a fabulous cart to make your own face mask or lip scrub. It’s a good job Mini wasn’t with us or we’d have struggled to get her to leave, not that I’d blame her as the space is amazing, time here would make a very special treat.
As we arrived at The Lion Zen we were warmly welcomed by Kirsty, who was going to cut Baby Mack’s hair. Kirsty engaged with him, took time to talk to him and get to know him and was so calm throughout. I genuinely think this helped him settle and feel at ease throughout the haircut. She didn’t rush the experience at all and gave us space to enjoy the special milestone as a family.
First Haircut Package at The Lion Zen
To begin with we helped get Baby Mack safely strapped into one of the cutting chairs. We went for the lion chair as it matched the lion he had on his t-shirt. The chairs are like ride ons, with plenty of space for legs to hang down and a handle to hold onto in front. Kirsty helped us to use the five point safety harness to get Baby Mack secured. As he is still quite small I made sure I stayed by the side of him just in case he wriggled and to help reassure him too.
Once safely in place Kirsty put a cape on him to protect his clothes. He got a little unsure at this point as I think he was confused that his hands were covered. Again Kirsty, took time to wait for him to be settled and happy to continue.
The Lion Zen focuses on creating a low sensory, calming environment. Therefore they don’t recommend that phones and screens are used to distract children during their haircuts. However, there was a large tub of beautiful books and toys available to use. Baby Mack particularly liked playing with a steering wheel toy during his haircut.
When his haircut was finished we took him out of the chair and gently brushed him down. Kirsty had done such a brilliant job, he instantly looked so different. He looked so smart and grown up, like he’d been changed into a proper little boy rather than my baby.
As part of the first haircut package, Baby Mack received a certificate and a beautiful glass bottle with a lock of his hair in with the date on. Kirsty also took a polaroid picture of the three of us together. These are definitely things that we will treasure and I’ve put safely into his memory box to look back on when he is older. It really felt like The Lion Zen had thought of everything.
Whilst waiting for his certificate, Back Mack enjoyed playing in the ball pool, although he also took a liking to the bottles of sparkly nail varnish for sale! The certificate, bottle of hair and poloroid were all lovingly packaged up in a special goody bag, complete with vegan sweets.
Thank you to The Lion Zen for such a special experience. I’d highly recommend the salon as a way to mark this special milestone. We can’t wait to come back soon to investigate the princess pamper suite further.
